KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, March 24th, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Cat Stevens: The words of the songs speak for themselves.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from North Bergen, New Jersey yet again.]

I think that this week's installment deserves a grade of A, although an A- was tempting. But i'm in a good mood, i'll give it an A.

There was certainly enuff schtuff this morning that i can honestly say that i love, but there was also a lot of music that was just plain ordinary. Pleasant but not exceptional. At least there was nothing that made me want to throw the laptop out the window, and it's always great to hear Cheryl Dilcher, which doesn't happen very often. Wishbone Ash and Renaissance were probably the highlights for me, oh, and Genesis, too. And Chicago and The Sutherland Bros....

It was nice to hear Max Webster, too – one of my favourite Canadian bands. I'm sorry, though, that “Battle Scar” seems to be the only song of theirs that is ever aired on KSHE – they did so many that are much better, Dave. Maybe i should get my own radio program – I have the perfect face for radio, at least....

That's Cheryl Dilcher down there, btw. It may not be her real hair.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, March 17th, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Brendan Behan: It's not that the Irish are cynical. It's rather that they have a wonderful lack of respect for everything and everybody.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from North Bergen, New Jersey again – zip code 07047, to be more exact.]

It was a special St Patrick's Day edition of the show today, and Uman was broadcasting live from Helen Flanagan's Irish Pub And Grill, 3650 S. Lindbergh Boulevard in south St Louis. At least half of the songs were by Irish performers, and almost every song was by an artist with a (sometimes tenuous) connection to Eire (Sammy Hagar is of Irish ancestry? Who knew?) or at least had the word “green” in its title.

Some of the music had no Hibernian connection at all – at least, not as far as i could tell. I mean, Santana? Jimi Hendrix? Really?

The inclusion of Rory Gallagher (b. Ballyshannon, County Donegal) and Mama's Pride (a couple of whose members, the Liston brothers, are of Irish descent) automatically means that this week's show is graded an A+ and the fact is i probably would have awarded that grade anyway, but in some ways it was strangely unsatisfying. For instance, why were there two songs each by U2, Horslips and Thin Lizzy, but only one Rorysong? And why Steely Dan's “Chain Lightning” when their song “Green Earrings” would have been more appropriate? Further, as much as i love Peter Gabriel's music, there's no Irish in him whatsoever.

Anyway, here's the playlist. There was one song i was unable to identify, although i'd heard it before, but i think the title is “Come Ride The Highway With Me.” And there's a picture of Helen Flanagan's. I didn't get there when i was in St Lou, and to be honest it doesn't look like my type of place particularly: not specially cosy. I'm sure the regulars love it :-)

Horslips – Sure The Boy Was Green
Eddie Money – Get A Move On
Thin Lizzy – Whiskey In The Jar
The Outlaws – Green Grass And High Tides
Rory Gallagher – Moonchild
U2 – Two Hearts Beat As One
Creedence Clearwater Revival – Green River
The Lemon Pipers – Green Tambourine
????? - Come Ride On The Highway With Me (?)
Wings – 1985
Sammy Hagar – (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay
Thin Lizzy – Showdown
Horslips – The Man Who Built America
U2 – Gloria
Steely Dan – Chain Lightning
Gerry Rafferty – Right Down The Line
Michael Martin Murphey – Medicine Man
Moon Martin – Rolene
Ian McLagan – Li'l Troublemaker
Heart – How Deep It Goes
The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays

Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill
The Kinks – Destroyer
Van Morrison – Wild Night
Kansas – Go To Rock On

One final note: one of these weeks i'm going to get my stopwatch out. Uman always announces “four hours of KSHE classics” but there are so many commercials i'm sure the actuality is that it's less than three hours' worth. It's still the highlight of my week, though!

My specialist in internal medicine recommended these albums for me this week, and who am i to argue with him?

Cat Stevens – The Best Of Cat Stevens
Jonathan Edwards -- Jonathan Edwards
Peter Hammill – In A Foreign Town

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, March 10th, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Ringo Starr: So this is America. They must be out of their minds.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from North Bergen, New Jersey again.]

This week, i'm doing something i've only done once before (as far as i can remember): grading the show A++ -- or, eight stars out of a possible five. Yes, it was that good. Hot damn!

Rory Gallagher, of course, automatically means an A+ but there was so much else that was pure magic i felt i had to bump it up. The Rorysong was brilliant, of course, but i think that the highlight of the show (for me) was Diesel's “Sausalito Summernights,” which had me playing air bass guitar (very badly) and trying to dance in my chair! (Also very badly). The Records' “Starry Nights” pretty much had the same effect. Power pop for the ages.

Even the REO Speedwagon song – and i'm on record as stating that i can't stand REO Speedwagon – wasn't all that bad.

Oh, and we had The Beatles, the most important group in history. Uman rarely plays them, but said that he thinks he'll play them more often, which would be great – if it happens. (A while back he said he'd be playing Renaissance more often, but so far he hasn't.)

A couple of technical notes: my Internet connection died in the middle of the Peter Gabriel song, but i have the KSHE app on my 'phone and immediately switched to that, and then rebooted my router, and the connection came back up for the second half of The Doors' song. Nevertheless, i did miss a tiny bit of the program. Secondly, Uman announced Cat Stevens' “Oh Very Young” but didn't actually play the song, which was a bit of a bummer as it's such a beautiful piece of music. Oh, well, i have the CD and played it right after the show ended.

Here's the playlist:

The Little River Band – Statue Of Liberty
Pink Floyd – San Tropez
Eddie Money – Rock And Roll The Place
Journey – Dixie Highway

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, March 3rd, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Nick Lowe: The world is full of musicians who can play great, and you wouldn't cross the road to see them. It's people who have this indefinable attitude that are the good ones.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from North Bergen, New Jersey, just a hop, skip 'n' a jump from NYC, where i spent the last few Sundays.]

I confess i approached this week's show with a little trepidation after the last two relatively uninspiring installments, but i was worried for naught. Definitely grading the show an A+ -- which is automatic when there's a Dan Fogelberg track, of course, but the fact is it would have merited A+ even without Dan.

There was one song which actively annoyed me, and that was the Blood, Sweat & Tears number: i think i hated everything they did after Al Kooper left the group and David Clayton Thomas took over the vocals – i can't stand the guy. I met him once and he's a complete pillock. (Admittedly, he made some decent music in Toronto back in the sixties, with his band The Shays: i had a few of their 45s and they weren't bad at all. But he himself was always a fuckwit.) And, oh sure, there were a few songs that were unexceptional (Benny Mardones? Really?), but, wow, look at that list down there: so many great songs.
