KSHE Klassics Show, Sept. 23rd, 2018

Quotation du jour: St Teresa Of Avila ~ May God protect me against gloomy saints.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here. I have to connect via a VPN to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/, i was listening from New York City, as has been usual recently.]

To be honest, it was the Dan Fogelberg song that saved this week's show from a B+ rating – and it wasn't even one of Dan's best songs. The automatic A+ was barely merited: it was far from being a stellar installment. The show started off slowly, the first hour had little to recommend it (and the Ted Nugent song was embarrassingly bad, although it was a live performance and the audience obviously loved it, so what do I know?) but eventually it took off. It never really soared, though.

Apart from the above-mentioned number by Da Nuge, there was nothing this morning that I actively disliked: most of the music was fine and it was still the highlight of my week. The thing is, there was very little I can honestly say I loved. (This blog is all about me, of course! Disagree? Start yer own damn blog, Cate!) The Dan, obviously; The Eagles, Peter Gabriel, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Warren Zevon.... IMFFHO, though, the best selection today was The Allman Brothers Band's. They're a group I like more now than I did back in their heyday.

Here's Bob Welch. R.I.P.

Bob Welch – Hot Love, Cold World
The Outlaws – Freeborn Man
Foghat – Take Me To The River
Santana – Lightning In The Sky
Ted Nugent – Papa's Will

The Band – Stage Fright
Supertramp – Lover Boy
Eagles – Midnight Flyer
Batdorf & Rodney – Home Again
Dickie Betts – Long Time Gone
The Marshall Tucker Band – Never Trust A Stranger
Steppenwolf – Monster
Sea Level – That's Your Secret

The Fabulous Thunderbirds – Tuff Enuff
Dan Fogelberg – Times Like These

Peter Gabriel – That Voice Again

Z.Z. Top – Party On The Radio
The Little River Band – Take It Easy On Me
The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band – Fallin' In Love
Warren Zevon – Werewolves Of London

I tell people that I listen to a wide variety of musics, but, looking over the list of the albums I played at home this week, it ain't that eclectic. Classic rock, blues-rock, folk and folk-rock mostly. I may have to re-define myself.

Rory Gallagher – Top Priority

Manfred Mann's Earthband – Chance
Yes – Tormato

KSHE Klassics Show, Sept. 16th, 2018

Quotation du jour: William Hjortsberg ~ It was a nice afternoon, too nice to spoil with the car radio’s hit parade lineup of adenoidal retards.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here. I have to connect via a VPN to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/, i was listening from New York City, as i have so often been recently.] [I can split infinitives there as well as i can anywhere else.]

Is it possible to give a higher score than A+? Dan Fogelberg was on this morning's playlist and that automatically gives the installment an A+ and it was one of Dan's best songs, "Nether Lands" – actually, one of the most beautiful songs anywhere. I was in the kitchen making breakfast when the song came on. Breakfast waited.

The fact is, though, that i would have given this week an A+ (six stars out of five?) even without Dan. I'd noticed in recent weeks that The Klassics Show, great as it is, had become just a tad repetitive. This morning, John Ulett (the host) announced that he was planning to play a whole load of schtuff that he hadn't played in a while and he was true to his word. There was music here that i can't recall ever hearing before, and i can't remember (and i can't be arsed going through the archives) the last time i heard any of the others. There was nothing that i hated and loads that i loved.

Journey – When You're Alone (It Ain't Easy)
Charlie – Turning To You
Steely Dan – Everyone's Gone To The Movies
Stephen Stills – Change Partners
Jefferson Starship – Count On Me
The Moody Blues – Isn't Life Strange
April Wine – Tonight
Jesse Colin Young – Songbird
38 Special – If I'd Been The One
The Marshall Tucker Band – You Ain't Foolin' Me
Colin Newman – Better Later Than Never
The Yardbirds – Shapes Of Things
Spirit – Animal Zoo
Nektar – Remember The Future
Dan Fogelberg – Nether Lands
Lou Reed – Sweet Jane (live)
Eric Clapton – Tulsa Time
Supertramp – Oh Darling
Buckingham Nicks – Don't Let Me Down Again
10 c.c. -- Art For Art's Sake
The Tarney-Spencer Band – No Time To Lose
Barclay James Harvest – Poor Boy Blues
Jethro Tull – Skating Away (On The Thin Ice Of A New Day)
Queen – '39
Gary Wright – Water Sign
Ron Wood – I Can Feel The Fire
Morningstar – Sad Lady
Phil Collins – Like China
Van Morrison – Moondance
Steppenwolf – Rock Me
George Harrison – My Sweet Lord
Ambrosia – No Big Deal
Montrose – I Got The Fire
Asia – Soul Survivor (incorrectly identified by the station as being by Phish)
Graham Nash – Chicago/We Can Change The World

I didn't really want to play any of these albums at home this week, but my cat insisted and I spoil her rotten, so here's what I had to suffer (most of it was OK but that Larry Coryell album is dreadful, OMG):

John Kirkpatrick – Coat Tails Flying
Garfield – Out There Tonight
The Bothy Band – The Bothy Band
Don Henley – The End Of The Innocence
The Beatles – Revolver
Dan Fogelberg – Phoenix
Maddy Prior – Woman In The Wings

Highly Strung – When The Winds Begin To Sing
Caro Emerald – The Shocking Miss Emerald
Planxty – Cold Blow And The Rainy Night
Survivor – Vital Signs
Alanis Morissette – Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Robin Trower – Day Of The Eagle

KSHE Klassics Show, Sept. 9th, 2018

Quotation du jour: Quentin Tarantino ~ "Sure, Kill Bill is a violent movie. But it's a Tarantino movie. You don't go to see Metallica and ask the fuckers to turn the music down."

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here. I have to connect via a VPN to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/, i was listening from New York City and happy to be there again.]

A great show this week.

As i've said before, any edition that includes a song by Dan Fogelberg is given an A+ and this week there were two numbers. Admittedly, the first of the two was an overture rather than a song, but who's carping?

The fact is, though, that the A+ was merited regardless. I don't really think that metal bands like Molly Hatchet and Judas Priest belong on the Klassics Show, but i didn't dislike their contributions, so let that pass. There were also one or two songs that i could have lived without, but i didn't hate them; i can't complain about that, either. [My cat writes: oh, shut it, i'm sure you'll find something to complain about somewhere.]

Two of my top fifty fave songs of all time were here, too: the Mott The Hoople and the Todd Rundgren, but, really, there was so much schtuff that i loved. I want to have this program's babies. It was, as usual, the highlight of my week.

Thin Lizzy – Showdown
Fleetwood Mac – Heroes Are Hard To Find
The Steve Miller Band – Serenade

Touch – Black Star
Santana – Winning

KSHE Klassics Show, Sept. 2, 2018

Quotation du jour: Nick Hornby ~ I love the relationship that anyone has with music ... because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. ... It's the best part of us probably ...

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here. I have to connect via a VPN to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/, i was back in New York City. Suits me!]

It was the "Now That's What I Call KSHE" Labour Day weekend, although in St Louis it would have been called the "Labor" Day weekend, and listener-submitted playlists were featured for all three days. On Sunday, they took up the second two hours of the Klassics Show, and i was worried. I think that the last time a listener took the helm, the joker programmed five songs in a row by Slade. (I mean, really: i like Slade and all, but five in a row?)

I worried for nowt. Overall, today's show scores an A (i.e., 5 stars out of 5). Each half also scores an A, but i think – sorry Uman – that the second half was marginally superior to the first! There was lots of music that i love in both sections, part one's score was reduced by a millimetre with the inclusion of Bad Company's "Rock Steady." Bad Company were a great band, but that song? I've heard it so often i'm sick of it, and, after all, the Klassics Show is supposed to be about songs you haven't heard in a while.

Santana – You Know That I Love You
Electric Light Orchestra – Mr Blue Sky
Dave Mason – Every Woman
Jay Ferguson – Shakedown Cruise
Jefferson Starship – Save Your Love

Gary Wright – Love Is Alive
Crosby & Nash – Immigration Man
Roger Daltrey – It's A Hard Life/Giving It All Away
The Quicksilver Messenger Service – What About Me
Queen – Tie Your Mother Down
