KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, November 24th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Fran Lebowitz: There are two kinds of music – good music and bad music. Good music is music that i want to hear. Bad music is music that i don't want to hear.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Santa Clara, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley.]

I'm sorry to say it but i can't give a grade higher than B+ to this week's program, in spite of the inclusion of one of my all-time favourite songs, “Sweet Baby James” (a song that literally helped save my life) (long story). “Like A Rolling Stone” is a work of genius – too bad the audio stream failed half way through but never mind, i'll listen to the album later. And, oh, for sure there was a fair bit of music this morning that i loved. ELP, George Harrison of course, Neil Young, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac leap to mind. But there was also far too much that was just ordinary. OK music, but nothing special.

Some of the problems i had with the show: all 15 minutes (!) of the Midnight Sun track were extremely tedious and the Joe Perry Project's song was so bad it was almost painful to listen to (yes, even worse than Ted Nugent!). And two tracks by Journey?? I actually do like some of Journey's schtuff – i have their Greatest Hits album and every song on it is terrific. But i don't think i have ever heard anything else by them that i liked.

It may just have been my imagination, but there seemed to be more ads this week than normal, too. I don't mind hearing the St Louis ads – they add the local colour – but so many, and yet another week with no ad from Bart Inman.... Sad.

Anyway, here's a pic of Santa Clara and the playlist:

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, November 17th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Voltaire: The ear is the avenue to the heart.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was stuck inside of Cheney (Kansas) with the Memphis blues again.] [Hey, it's a small town – not much to do here but listen to the radio.]

It's a difficult one to grade this week. Yes, it gets A+ for including Dan Fogelberg, but his two albums with Tim Weisberg are a long way from being favourites. Ironically, considering the fact that the track was “The Power Of Gold,” Weisberg sued Fogelberg for breach of contract after their second collaboration CD. I guess the message (i.e., money is evil) was lost somewhere....

Otherwise, it was a very good if not a Snuffles the dog floating to the ceiling in ecstasy edition. We had Humble Pie, we had The Allman Brothers, Greg Kihn, Van Morrison, The Sutherland Brothers, Eagles, Poco and Steely Dan. But then we also had U2 (a group i don't really believe belongs on this show – although i do like some of their music). REO Speedwagon (ugh) and, er, Wiggy Bits (?), and a Styx song about romancing a 17-year old girl, which made me feel more than a little uncomfortable to be honest...

Oh, look! There's Snuffles! Guess he was listening to last week's show....

Heart – How Deep It Goes
Wiggy Bits – Love Track
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – I Need To Know
The Babys – California
REO Speedwagon – I Need You Tonight

My own personal playlist this week.... I may have mentioned that i fired all of my psychiatric health-care professionals (a.k.a. bartenders). Some were good, but the one who was forced upon me the most often was terrible. I have new prospects and i'm hopeful but yet again i had to choose this week's albums on my own. I don't think i did too badly. Here's the list and yes, Christmas music is creeping in early this year....

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, November 10th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Lewis Carroll: Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Cheney, Kansas, yet again.

Right, well, this week's program scores an A+ for sure! Rory Gallagher means that that grade is automatic, but there was so much more than dear old Rory. “Hocus Pocus” by Focus is such an amazing piece of music – Bill, the deejay at that other station i listen to, said that when he first heard it in 1971, his first thought was “what the hell was that?!?” and his second thought was, “i want to hear it again!” -- it's always great to hear Cheryl Dilcher, “I Can't Explain” is one of my favourite Who singles, anything from Deep Purple's “Machine Head” album is fine by me, and that Nazareth song is one of my favourites of theirs. Oh, and Todd Rundgren, too!

It wasn't all joy, health, love and peace, however. Two songs by Ted Nugent? Aw, c'mon, John. I can barely tolerate The Nuge at the best of times and today's selections were egregious. Sloppy guitar playing, stupid lyrics, just full-throttle annoying. However, thanks to the excellence of the rest of the show, you are forgiven. (And to paraphrase Anderson Cooper on CNN last week, some of you may need to look up what “egregious” means, and by “some of you” i mean Donald J. Trump, Jr. I don't think D.J.T.J. reads this blog, though....)

But enough about politicians. On to the music (and one photo of Denver – which looks gorgeous).

Bob Seger – Get Out Of Denver
Rory Gallagher – Brute Force And Ignorance
Firefall – Goodbye, I Love You
The Marshall Tucker Band – Twenty-Four Hours At A Time
Hall & Oates – Goodnight And Good Morning
Michael Murphy – Renegade
Ted Nugent – Great White Buffalo
Unicorn – Ooh Mother
Cheryl Dilcher – Who's The Captain (Of Rock 'N' Roll)
Nantucket – Heartbreaker

In personal news:

OK, that's it, i have fired all of my therapists (a.k.a. bartenders). The good ones never seem to be at the clinic (i.e., pub) when i go there and i'm stuck with Neanderthals who wouldn't recognise a playlist if they found one in their soup. I had to choose my week's playlist all on my own-ee-o. I did a pretty good job, i think. Here's the list, make up yer own minds:

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, November 3rd, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Clarence Clemons: As a horn player, the greatest compliment one can get is when a person comes up to you and says “I heard this saxophone on the radio the other day and i knew it was you. I don't know the song, but i knew it was you on sax.”

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Cheney, Kansas, again.

It was a wonderful program this week: it definitely earned a grade of “A.” Just look at that list down there – lots of music i can honestly say i love, nothing i hated, and only one song that was just the teensiest bit tedious. (That would be J.F. Salt's yawn-o-rama.)

What a great start, too, with the often wonderful Wishbone Ash (still going strong after an incredible fifty years in the biz). Other favourites included George Harrison, The Moody Blues, The Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck (incidentally my second favourite guitarist of all time), The Beatles (of course!), Jon & Vangelis and Jimi Hendrix.
