KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, July 28th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Bart Inman: We offer a complete selection of commercial heating and air conditioning services for small businesses located throughout the entire St. Louis metro area in Missouri and Illinois.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from Clifton, New Jersey again.]

Ah, yes, another four hours' worth of ads, with the occasional interruption by a classic (or “Klassic”) rock song. Maybe they're what i should be commenting on?

Someone complained on Facebook recently that Bart Inman (owner of Bart Inman Air Heating & Cooling https://www.inmanair.com/ ) had a really boring voice. I disagree – i like his voice, he has a rather lazy drawl, admittedly, but i don't find it tiresome in the least.

Tom Shane, of The Shane Jewelry Company (https://www.shaneco.com/ ), though – that's a different story: his voice is so tedious i could almost fall asleep. Then there's the unknown woman with the (fake?) Bronx accent in the spots for Frank Leta Honda
( https://www.frankletahonda.com/) although that's a bit different – her voice isn't boring, merely irritating.

Then of course there's Arnold, from The Good Feet Store (with branches in Creve Coeur and Shiloh, Illinois) (https://www.goodfeet.com/st-louis/) -- i've always enjoyed his ads, ever since i started listening to KSHE all those years ago.

As for the music, oh, it was pretty good. I'm grading this week's show an “A+” primarily because of the great Mama's Pride track, although though i can't honestly say there was much else that i actually loved. Oh, for sure there were a few – Todd Rundgren, for instance, and that Brownsville Station number is a tremendous amount of fun. At least there was nothing that made me want to tear the headphones off and stomp on them and, as usual, the commercials – er, i mean, the songs – were over far too soon.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, July 21st, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Groucho Marx: Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from Clifton, New Jersey again.]

The Klassics show's host, John Ulett, along with Mark Klose (a jock at the station on Fridays and Saturdays and member of the St Louis Radio Hall Of Fame) (and an old friend of John's) were broadcasting live from the Music Record Shop at 3116 Locust St in downtown St Louis today, an event they called the KSHE Vinyl Tap https://www.kshe95.com/event/kshe-vinyl-tap/ It was a big sale of vinyl albums from KSHE's basement (they must have all been digitised by now) and apparently it's an excellent used record store (i've never been there). KSHE was broadcasting from there all day, and the co-hosts spent a lot of time reminiscing about the good old days of pops and crackles.

Unfortunately, as interesting (and funny!) as the chats were, it meant that we heard even less music than usual. Kind of a bummer, really, as, based on what was played, this instalment definitely merits a grade of A. Oh, sure, there were some mediocre songs, and i'm on record as stating that the voices of David Surkamp and Dennis DeYoung effect me like fingernails on a blackboard, but i'm in a good mood today, i shall overlook those atrocities.

It's difficult for me to choose a highlight, but if pressed, i'd probably choose “Maggie's Farm.” A great song and when was the last time you heard it on the radio? As Mark Klose said at one point, this is the best radio show anywhere.

Here's the playlist, and here's the Music Record Shop:

Jefferson Airplane – Lather
Deep Purple – Kentucky Woman
Yes – Don't Kill The Whale
Widowmaker – Leave The Kids Alone
The Moody Blues – Legend Of A Mind

Journey – La Raza Del Sol
Robin Trower – My Love (Burning Love)

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, July 14th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Graham Nash (on Dan Fogelberg): The world became a little brighter because of his music.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from San Francisco again.]

Well, that didn't start in too promising a fashion: the lead singer of Pavlov's Dog (a St Louis band), David Surkamp, has one of the most irritating voices i have ever heard. (Mike Reno of Loverboy, whose song was the next but one, has a voice that can effect me like fingernails on a blackboard, wasn't too bad on “Queen Of The Broken Hearts”).

I knew that it couldn't possibly get any worse and of course it didn't, in spite of the inclusion of Ted Nugent and (ugh) REO Speedwagon (whose singer, Kevin Cronin, is another whose voice makes me want to perform self-evisceration). It wasn't extraordinary, though. I was all set to grade it an A- until Dan Fogelberg came on in the final hour, which automatically kicked it up to A++

Lots of music to love, and a lot of Canadian music too – not necessarily the same thing, obviously, but KSHE does play a lot of Canadian music that is never heard on Canadian radio and today there was more than usual. (Uman even admitted that he was in a Canadian mood – what, no Max Webster? -- maybe because there's a heat wave in St Lou and it's not all that hot here; he's jealous!)

For me, today's highlights were Bob Dylan, The Strawbs, Marillion and of course, Dan Fogelberg. The best four hours (minus commercials) of radio anywhere.

Pavlov's Dog – Julia
Prism – Julie
Loverboy – Queen Of The Broken Hearts
Uriah Heep – July Morning
UFO – Too Hot To Handle
April Wine – Shot Down
Bob Dylan – Just Like A Woman
David Lee Roth – Just Like Paradise
Ted Nugent – Just What The Doctor Ordered
Marillion – Kayleigh
Triumph – I Live For The Weekend
Streets – If Love Should Go
The Doobie Brothers – South City Midnight Lady
Strawbs – Lay Down
Kayak – Keep The Change
Kenny Loggins – Celebrate Me Home
REO Speedwagon – That Ain't Love
Heart – White Lightning And Wine
Queen – Stone Cold Crazy
Steely Dan – The Royal Scam
Charlie – Fantasy Girl
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – The Wind Cries Mary
Deep Purple – Child In Time
Trooper – Knock 'Em Dead Kid
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – King's Road
Journey – Topaz
Brownsville Station – Lady Put The Light On Me
Leon Russell – Lady Blue
The Beatles – Maxwell's Silver Hammer
The Guess Who – Albert Flasher
Dan Fogelberg – Love Gone By

Lake – Between The Lines
Rush – A Passage To Bangkok
Shooting Star – Hang On For Your Life
Michael Stanley – Rosewood Bitters
The Babys – I'm Falling
U2 – In God's Country
The Marshall Tucker Band – I'll Be Loving You

As i've mentioned, i pay my psychiatrist a vast amount of money every week and she recommends albums for me to play at home as a form of stress relief. This was this week's list. She is very good (and the fact that she looks like Marica Hase doesn't hurt, either!):

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, July 7th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Yogi Berra: It ain't over 'til it's over.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from San Francisco.]

Well, that was fun! This week's show definitely scores an A.

There was some brilliant music, some pretty obscure schtuff – nothing too annoying, although i don't think i've ever heard a Stevie Nicks solo recording that didn't get on my nerves at least a little – one song that didn't really belong (the 90's power ballad by Giant) and one number that made me think i was listening to Radio Paradise, Michael Quatro interpreting Rachmaninoff.

The highlight was probably the Yes song in the final hour, but there were quite a few to choose from. In fact, i ordered Jackson Browne's CD on the strength of his brilliant song. The lowlight? Probably Normie Rowe, whose song was utterly inconsequential.

And, well done, U.S.A., in the women's football (or, soccer, for those outside most of the world). Megan Rapinoe for president!

Bob Seger – 'Til It Shines
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils – Take You Tonight
38 Special – If I'd Been The One
Bob Dylan – Blowin' In The Wind
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – If 6 Was 9
Mama's Pride – Maybe
The Who – Boris The Spider
Bad Company – Holy Water

Manassas – It Doesn't Matter
Phil Collins – Only You Know And I Know

You may be surprised to learn that i'm not really a nervous wreck. Well, maybe just a bit; as a precaution, i pay my psychiatrist a substantial sum of money to prescribe a list of albums for me to play at home each week.
