KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, August 25th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Bob Dylan: Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don't find it anywhere else.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, https://whatismyipaddress.com/ was again unable to locate me precisely, but i was somewhere in central Kansas for the second time.]

I don't think i can grade this week's show much higher than a B, i'm sorry to say. There was nothing actively wrong with it and nothing annoying, but there was not much extraordinary, either: probably only two or three numbers that would make my Top 1000 Favourite Songs List. I didn't think that Michael Bolton belonged here (although his song was all right) and why a 16-minute song by Nektar for goodness' sake? Again, it was all right, if a little tedious, but that 16 minutes could have been put to far better use, IMO. (Few performers can pull off a sixteen-minute track; Nektar isn't one of them.)

The highlight for me was probably the Jefferson Starship track, although it was great to hear that 1960s British Invasion schtuff. Anyway, here's the playlist and some nectar.

Yes, it was another one of those weeks. Here's the soundtrack to it, and, with my therapist in Bali for a much-needed rest (from me) and my secondary therapist Adriana (bartender at Bentley's Inn) MIA (she may have fled to Bali, too!) i had to choose these all by myself. I think i did okay....

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, August 18th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Dylan Thomas: Oh, I'm a martyr to music.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, https://whatismyipaddress.com/ was unable to locate me precisely, but i was somewhere in central Kansas .]

I don't think i can grade this week's program higher than a B plus, i'm afraid. There was one truly awful song (the Ray Manzarek, and he's neither a singer nor a songwriter) and the number by Axe was pretty moronic, but the problem was that there wasn't a whole lot that i loved this morning: maybe six songs in four hours (the highlight being FM's “Phasors On Stun”).

Plus, in an appalling gaffe, Uman mis-identified the group Man as being English, whereas they are a group proud of their Welsh heritage. In fact, i have an album of theirs on which the cover is a cartoon of the group pushing Cymru (that's Welsh for Wales) away from England with bargepoles...

I'd love to share that cover with you, but i couldn't find it. Here's the Welsh flag, instead:

Procol Harum – Pandora's Box
Lake – Chasing Colours
Z.Z. Top – Party On The Patio
The Doors – Crystal Ship
Ray Manzarek – Bicentennial Blues
FM – Phasors On Stun
Eddie Money – Walk On Water
Jimi Hendrix – Red House
The Guess Who – Share The Land
John Mellencamp – Justice And Independence '85
Ron Wood – I Can Feel The Fire
Man – Kerosene
Tommy Bolin – Post Toastee
Loggins & Messina – My Pretty Princess
Bob Seger – Ramblin' Gamblin' Man
Ambrosia – Ready
Tycoon – Such A Woman
Jackson Browne – You Love The Thunder
Eric Clapton – Tulsa Time
The Beatles – From Me To You
The Yardbirds – Shapes Of Things
The Marshall Tucker Band – You Ain't Foolin' Me
The Fixx – Stand Or Fall
David Bowie – Stay
The Greg Kihn Band – Remember
Russ Ballard – Rene Didn't Do It

Blue Öyster Cult – Black Blade
Blues Image – Ride Captain Ride
The Moody Blues – Watching And Waiting
Tantrum – Rather Be Rockin'
Lou Reed – Rock And Roll
Axe – Rock 'N' Roll Party In The Streets
Phil Collins – Like China
The Fabulous Poodles – Roll Your Own
Asia – Soul Survivor

Last week, my stress-relieving playlist was suggested to me by Adriana, my favourite bartender at Bentley's. But i didn't see her this week. I had to choose this for myself!

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, August 11th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Lester Bangs: The thing is that, they all had real strong personalities and real distinct identities, and I don't find most of the groups that are coming out now really do.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from San Francisco.]

I'm grading this week's instalment an A+ (the inclusion of a Dan Fogelberg song makes that grade automatic) but, seriously, without that, it would have been a “mere” A minus.

There was certainly nothing that i actively disliked, but not a whole lot that was mind-bogglingly brilliant, either. Lots that i liked, little that i loved....

Probably my favourite song was Led Zep's “Kashmir,” but i don't honestly know why that was a part of The Klassics Show as it's a song that KSHE plays regularly anyway. Possibly it was a part of regular programming, but if that's the case John Ulett ended the show three minutes early, which i would consider rather a liberty!

Otherwise, the highlights for me were Badfinger, Bob Seger, The Kinks, Saga and Bob Dylan. Here's the playlist:

Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks – Needles And Pins
The Rolling Stones – Dandelion
Dan Fogelberg – Times Like These
Vinegar Joe – Never Met A Dog

Bruce Springsteen – Cover Me
Bob Seger – Nutbush City Limits
Jefferson Starship – Lightning Rose
Aldo Nova – Monkey On Your Back
Rod Stewart – Oh, No, Not My Baby
Thin Lizzy – Old Flame
Saga – On The Loose
Paul Collins & The Beat – On The Highway
The Pousette-Dart Band – What Can I Say
Les Dudek – Old Judge Jones
Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Blue Collar
Lighthouse – One Fine Morning
Zebra – Tell Me What You Want
The Alan Parsons Project – Time
The Kinks – No More Looking Back
Bryan Adams – One Night Love Affair

Tonio K. -- Better Late Than Never
Bill Quateman – Only Love
The Band – The Shape I'm In
Rare Bird – Beautiful Scarlet
Bob Dylan – Subterranean Homesick Blues
Led Zeppelin – Kashmir

It's my psychotherapist who usually recommends what cds i should play as stress-relievers each week, but, thanks to the extraordinary amount of money i pay her, she's gone to Bali for a while. Maybe to get away from me, i'm not sure. This list comes, instead, from my favourite bartender (and alternate therapist), Adriana at Bentley's Bar & Inn. To whom i also pay an extraordinary amount of money, btw.... (Her all-time favourite group is Foreigner, but no one's perfect....)

James Taylor – James Taylor's Greatest Hits

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, August 4th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~ Oscar Wilde: Over the piano was printed a notice: Please do not shoot the pianist. He is doing his best.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ , i was listening from Brandon, Florida. I've never listened from there before, although Brandon is in the Tampa area and i've been to Tampa in what we laughingly call “real” life. ]

Now this, ladies and gentlemen, is what i call radio!

Playing Dan Fogelberg (and it was one of his most beautiful songs, too) automatically gives the show a grade of A+ but the fact is, it would have earned A+ even without that. I've never actually gone to the trouble of listing my top 500 favourite songs ever – it would be a pretty fluid list, anyway – but eight or nine of this morning's selections would definitely be included. The Allmans, Billy Joel, Camel, Steely Dan, Robin Trower, Dan's song of course....

Oh sure, there were some annoyances. Ted Nugent and REO Speedwagon of course – although their songs weren't really all that bad. The worst was the Eric Clapton. Does that surprise you? I'm not a Clapton-basher as so many of my fellow Rory Gallagher fans are. But he hit the low point in his career during the seventies and “I've Got A Rock 'N' Roll Heart” is just dull, dull, dull – and this music has nothing to do with rock 'n' roll whatsoever.

Anyway, just clock this playlist and rejoice, and welcome to Brandon, Florida!

The Allman Brothers Band – Statesboro Blues
Pretenders – Middle Of The Road
Billy Joel – The Ballad Of Billy The Kid
Triumph – Young Enough To Cry
The James Gang – Midnight Man

Kansas – The Wall
Nazareth – Razamanaz
Eric Clapton – I've Got A Rock 'N' Roll Heart
Dan Fogelberg – Nether Lands
Camel – Who We Are
The Rolling Stones – Mixed Emotions
Van Morrison – Wavelength
The Grateful Dead – Playing In The Band
The Doors – Waiting For The Sun
Joe Walsh – County Fair
The Hollies – Magic Woman Touch
Janis Joplin – Mercedes Benz
