KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, June 28th, 2020

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Chicago. I think this is only the second time i've been there. I've actually been to the airport, but i've always wanted to visit the city itself in “real life” -- whatever that is – but nowadays virtual travel is the only way to go.]

Quotation Of The Week ~ Kim Mitchell: I feel square in a world that's round, i feel like a skinny Buddha.

What a shame about Chicago – the group, that is, not the city i'm visiting this week. Their first three or four albums were mostly brilliant, and although they released some great music after that, the rot was setting in and by the time of their eighth album, they were pretty much unlistenable. I know, because i bought it. Terry Kath had died and Peter Cetera was moving the band into vapid MOR drivel – the stuff that made him a fortune when he finally left the band and began his solo career, but the damage had been done. What a shame, then, that John Ulett chose a truly dire song of theirs for his show today. Well, he liked it – he said so – but it was probably the worst song he played today. (The Harry Chapin was a close contender.)

Otherwise, though, it was a wonderful four hours, and i'm grading it am “A+” -- not least because of the Mama's Pride track. (Gotta support the hometown boys!) Apart from the two dogs mentioned above, there was nothing annoying – not even the Ted Nugent, which was generic rock but not awful. The first hour alone was like listening to my own record collection.

Further, there were two musical moments when i actually laughed out loud – it's not something i do very often these days. Hearing “Go Now!” by The Moody Blues – a song i hadn't heard since maybe 1922 -- was such a delightful surprise, and then the long version of Arlo's “Motorcycle Song” -- in which he explains why he doesn't want that damned pickle – hilarious!

Stay safe and sane, everyone! Here's a pic of my friend Archy – India's only professional bagpipe player (what, you were expecting a photo of Ted Nugent?) – followed by the playlist.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, June 21st, 2020

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Pine Brook Hill, Colorado, pop. 1045. I've never been there before!]

Quotation Of The Week ~ Benjamin Franklin: I didn't fail the test. I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.

Oh, it was a difficult show to grade this week. There were a few songs that i love, a lot that were enjoyable but ordinary and then REO effing Speedwagon, a group that really irritates me, and i almost went with a relatively low (for this show) grade of “B+.” Then i considered how much i really do love some of the songs and more toleramt heads prevailed so i'll go a little, teeny tiny bit better and say “A-”.

I think that my favourite song this morning was Kayak's “I Want You To Be Mine.” No, really: it was a rare treat. There were certainly songs that i loved more, but i hadn't heard Kayak's in such a long time. The great songs by Billy Joel, The Beatles and The Byrds (just to mention the letter “b”) are songs i play at home regularly.

I learned some things this morning, too, thanks to the host John Ulett (a.k.a. Uman). Fleetwood Mac's song “World Turning” was actually written 'way back when by founding member of the band Peter Green. However, Buckingham-Nicks “adapted” it just enough that they wouldn't have to pay songwriter royalties to him. This was rather naughty of them, i think (although it's a fairly common practice in the cut-throat world of the music biz, where songwriting credits are the real goldmine.) As the album it came from, Rumours, sold approximately a gazillion copies, Peter would have been set up for life. It's a shame. (The same thing happened to blues legend Memphis Minnie, who wrote “When The Levee Breaks” and which Led Zeppelin covered, and although she actually did receive a writing credit on the album, she never received a cent in royalties and died in poverty.) (There's a rumour that Bonnie Raitt paid for her headstone.)

I also learned that The Byrds' “So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star” was inspired by The Monkees. The Monkees were a “manufactured” group and pretty much dismissed as a joke at the time, but the members were quite talented and although i didn't care for them then, i have since come to realise that they were a superb pop group.

Anyway, here's a (rather unfair IMO) image of why the Canada / U.S. border remains closed, and the playlist:

Triumph – Just A Game
Eric Clapton – Blues Power
Fleetwood Mac – World Turning
Kansas – Got To Rock On
Chicago – Make Me Smile

UFO – Rock Bottom

The Smithereens – Only A Memory
Todd Rundgren – Just One Victory
The Who – Boris The Spider

Mama's Pride – Maybe

It's not an overly long Spriggsblog Playlist this week, kids, which is kinda odd as there was only one 4-disc box (“Nuggets”) and only one 2-CD set, which was The Johnstons. There were a lot of fairly new releases, though, and they're generally an hour long, whereas older records clocked in at about 40 minutes. Anyway, here's the list. Stay safe and sane, if you can!

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, June 14th, 2020

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Chicago. I don't recall ever being there before, in terms of my VPN, and i've always wanted to visit the place in real life – whatever that is! I've been to the airport there, though: you can see the city's skyline 'way off in the distance and it really looks celestial. ]

Quotation Of The Week ~ George Carlin: I'll tell you a little secret about the blues. It's not enough to know which notes to play, you have to know why they need to be played.

Today was, of course, the 25th anniversary of Rory Gallagher's passing, and sure enough, we were treated to some Rory this morning – which automatically means a grade of “A+” -- as my regular reader will know. The show began in brilliant fashion, too, with one of my favourite Genesis songs from one of my favourite Genesis albums. Then a wheel came off.

The Grateful Dead bore(d) me senseless <ducking>. Then it deteriorated further: REO f*ck*ng Speedwagon, how do i hate thee, let me count the ways.... Their song's title should offer a clue: Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight. Really? I don't like ultimatums (ultimata?), but if someone said that to me my response would likely be, “eff off, dipshit.” Unless it was Kaley Cuoco....

But then, to carry on with the automotive metaphor, we found a jack and the wheel was replaced. Everything was fine, all was right with the world again. Jeff Beck – my all-time second favourite guitarist and Rory – my favourite guitarist! And so much else, so many much-loved choons: Cream, The Beatles (who now seem to make a weekly appearance, which is fine with me), Manfred Mann (and i hadn't heard that in a long time), what may well be my favourite Mama's Pride number and a delightful end with the Pretenders.

Sure there were a few obscurities: Snail? Jack Green? Johnny & The Distractions? But they were okay and even the Ted Nugent number wasn't oppressive, which was a nice surprise. So, apart from a few disturbing moments at the beginning, it was an egg-salent way to spend a Sabbath morning.

Here's a photo of Chicago's skyline – not the view from O'Hare, obviously! -- and the programme:

Genesis – Firth Of Fifth
The Grateful Dead – Casey Jones

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Norfolk, Virginia – a mere 770 miles from St Louis....]

Quotation Of The Week ~ Mark Twain: Sing like no one's listening / love like you've never been hurt / dance like no one is watching / and live like it's heaven on earth.

It wasn't a particularly auspicious start to this week's show, folks – it wasn't until after the first commercial break that Uman played a much-loved song and that was the Loggins & Messina track. . It pretty much soared after that, too, and the inclusion of Dan Fogelberg automatically means a grade of “A+.” I confess, though, that the REO Speedwagon track really annoyed me. I know, they're really popular in St Louis but their singer, Kevin Cronin, has a voice that makes me want to punch him in the face.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, May 31st, 2020

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Cheney, Kansas. Yes, back there again!

Quotation Of The Week ~ J.R.R. Tolkein: The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though now in all lands love is mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.

Looking for work? Universal Galvanizing in Wright City, Missouri, is hiring. Check it out here: https://universalgalvanizing.com/careers/ This is a public service announcement. Personally i wouldn't go anywhere near the States these days. The country i love is imploding, the streets are on fire, the people are furious, capitalism is failing, hate is everywhere. Their handling of the pandemic has been atrocious and their president is merrily tossing matches onto the TNT. But then, i wasn't thinking of applying.

It was a pretty dodgy start to this morning's instalment. I mean, Peter Cetera? Really? He hasn't done much of interest since the mid-seventies. (Today's song was from 1981.) All was forgiven, though, with the second number – not only a favourite James Taylor song, but also one of my all-time favourite songs, period. After that, oh, so many wonderful memories. I actually prefer The Move's version of “Do Ya” to ELO's; the Joe Vitale song is one of the few things i've ever bought from iTunes (he was the drummer in the Eagles' touring band for a while). And if anyone can tell me of another commercial FM station anywhere in the world that would play a twenty-two minute song by Yes, i would love to hear about it.

Further, there was nothing annoying, so this week's episode definitely gets an “A.”

America gets an "F."

Peter Cetera – Livin' In The Limelight
