KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, Mar. 21st, 2021

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here; i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof an American address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Chicago – zip code 60602, to be precise.]

Quotation Of The Week ~ Albert Einstein: If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.

I was pondering, the other day, the fact that The Klassics Show and KSHE in general play very few solo female artists. Sure, the play groups with female lead singers occasionally – just today we had Renaissance (with Annie Haslam) and Heart (the Wilson sisters) and although she wasn't on today's Jefferson Starship track, Grace Slick. But solo? Cheryl Dilcher and Janis Joplin are the only two who come to mind. I was planning to write something about misogyny in the radio industry and what happened? Janis Joplin shows up! Nice.... (Incidentally, the guitarist on Janis's track was John Till, who lives in my town. I've never met him but i know his son, Mike – in fact i taught Mike how to do cryptic crossword puzzles.)

Grace Slick, now. Loved her in Jefferson Airplane and some of the music she made with Jefferson Starship was brilliant but apparently she had a love / hate relationship with the latter ensemble, especially after Micky Thomas joined as singer: she kept quitting and re-joining. She wasn't on today's track and i'm glad: it was a low point of the morning, Mr Thomas's caterwauling really was annoying. Also annoying was the Joe Perry “rock 'n' roll for dummies” number. Surprisingly, this morning's REO Speedwagon song wasn't annoying at all, just boring and banal.

I'm grading this morning's instalment an “A+”. Yes, sure, Dan Fogelberg showed up which would have automatically given it supersonic status, but i think i merited irrespective of that. For one thing, it was such a delightful surprise to hear Fairport Convention! Although i've heard Fairport on KSHE before – on my friend and their former dee-jay Tommy T's overnight show – i don't recall them ever stopping in on a Sunday morning before. Plus we had one of The Who's finest moments, along with ELO, Wings, The Moody Blues and The Byrds. Just magic.

A couple of technical notes: contrary to what the KSHE website posted, It Keeps You Runnin' was not The Black Crowes' Black Moon Creeping, and Motherless Children was not Queen's Fun It.

Here's poor old Janis, and the playlist:
