This week's playlist is incomplete. Uman played songs by UFO, Jackson Browne and REO Speedwagon and i didn't know their titles (and he didn't announce them). Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, as i could just to go to http://www.kshe95.com/broadcasthistory for a list of all recently-played songs, but their broadcast history was very incomplete on Sunday. The KSHE Klassics Program, May 29th, 2016

Quotation du jour: Ludwig Van Beethoven ~Music is mediator between spiritual and sensual life.

It was an abbreviated edition of the program this week -- two hours instead of four, as KSHE had a Memorial Day special that interfered with it. Well, Memorial Day -- God Bless America and all that, 'twould be churlish of me to grouse about the loss of some radio magic. The edition wasn't all that great, though, i must say -- very few "ow, wow, wow, whoo!" moments. Perhaps Uman (the host) resented having half of his show being cut. His heart may not have been in it.

Before i present the playlist, though, i experienced a different type of radio magic this past week.

This past Tuesday, it was announced that Gord Downie, musical genius behind the Kingston, Ontario rock band The Tragically Hip -- huge in Canada, local heroes in Kingston, little known in any other country -- had terminal brain cancer. Now, although i listen to KSHE most weekday mornings, around 6 a.m. i usually switch to the Kingston station KROCK. It's a pretty good rock station and i have (Facebook) friends
there. I was there on Tuesday. The tragic news was announced and their morning deejay, Kris, did something extraordinary. The very first song he was scheduled to play was by Ozzy Osbourne. He stopped it after about twenty seconds, and said, "i can't play this today," and from then until i left for work -- and more than likely thereafter -- he played The Tragically Hip exclusively. That was a "wow" morning, and how many radio stations -- or deejays! -- would do that. (Makes me wonder, though, what'll happen there when poor Gord actually dies?)

OK, so here's the Klassics playlist:

The Pure Prairie League -- Two Lane Highway
Elton John -- Burn Down The Mission
The Bliss Band -- Doctor

Fort McMurray

Quotation du jour ~ Justin Trudeau: Canada has always been there to help people who need it.

I am inordinately proud of the country i live in atm.

As probably many will know, the city of Fort McMurray, in northern Alberta, was recently devastated by wildfires. There was a mandatory evacuation order and 88,000 people fled. There was no human injury but the losses and stress of the relocation must have been, well, something worse than i can possibly imagine. And i have a tenuous connection to Fort McMurray: i have a friend who moved there a couple of years ago.

When she posted (to Facebook) that she was safe, i felt such a feeling of relief. I also went to the Canadian Red Cross website and donated a whole heap of money. (I don't really want to talk about my charitable donations, it smacks too much of self-aggrandizement, but in this context it's okay, i think.)

And then, almost immediately, everywhere i went, there were donation boxes for Fort McMurray. and they were full. Not just with coins, but with ten and twenty dollar bills. (OK, i know that pic shows a jar full of American money, but you get the idea....)

Canada is often thought, globally, to be a pretty nice place where nothing much ever happens, and Canadians are generally a nice bunch of folks although not particularly dynamic. This isn't always true, of course. When there's a crisis, we don't fuck around. Would anyone care to help? The KSHE Klassics Show, May 15, 2016

Quotation du jour: Albert Einstein ~ The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

I missed last week's edition of the Sunday Klassics show -- the best four hours of radio anywhere (IMFFHO). Last Sunday was Mother's Day -- the busiest day of the year in my business -- and i had to work. (Anyone who is not scheduled to work on Mother's Day must be hopeless -- although we also had a few hopeless [read: useless] people working, too.) I tried to listen on my phone for a little while but it's such a noisy place and (as usual, duh) i had forgotten my earbuds, so i gave up.

But i was more than compensated this Sunday -- John Ulett (the host) presented a fabulous selection. I mean, all eighteen minutes of "Close To The Edge" by Yes? You don't get that anywhere else! The KSHE Klassics Program, May 1st 2016

Quotation du jour: Douglas Adams ~ I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

That was odd -- John Ulett (the host) played the same song twice, albeit in different versions. "Arms Of Mary." He played the original version by The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver, and the cover version by Chilliwack. Well, he knows what he's doing and wow, look at the playlist for yesterday's show! Sheer magic.
