KSHE Sunday Klassics Show, March 25, 2018

Quotation du jour ~ Unknown: I told my dad that I wanted to be a musician when I grew up and he said "Son, you can't do both."

I was listening from San Francisco this morning and, although it was a hassle-free listening experience (no connection dropouts or crashes of any kind), it nearly didn't happen thanks to one of my frequent technology nightmares. The details are irrelevant to this post; suffice to say that, with a great deal of time & frustration on Saturday evening, i managed to sort it all out. (I also discovered that the only place in Stratford that sells computer equipment after 6 p.m. on Saturdays is Wal-Mart* – I'll bet that's not the case in San Francisco!)

Since KSHE was bought by Hubbard Radio a month or so ago, i have noticed a major change in the way listenlive.co streams the audio. Back when Emmis Radio owned the station, the local St Louis ads were deleted from the stream to be replaced by public service announcements, ads for national corporations or ads targeted at me wherever my VPN told them i was listening from, and often with a completely inappropriate song included. Now, the insertion of a song is no longer, and i get the local ads. This week: O'Reilly's Auto Parts, One-Eleven Storage, The Goodfeet Store (with a branch in Shiloh, Illinois!), Motor City Auto Sales, Ramjack Of St Louis, Metro Lighting etc. I love listening to these ads – so exotic -- and i positively hated some of the songs so i applaud this change. Thanks, Hubbard!

KSHE Klassics Show, March 18th, 2018

Quotation du jour ~ Igor Stravinsky: I haven't understood a bar of music in my life, but I have felt it.

OMG, i love this program – just look at that playlist: so much schtuff i love dearly and nothing that made me want to chuck my PC out the window.

Today, i was in Oslo (at least, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/), which is odd to say the least, as i was listening from The Philippines a couple of weeks ago. I wonder where else besides Canada KSHE does not stream their audio to? At least i wasn't hearing targeted ads in Norwegian, though: in fact most of them were for local St Louis outfits: Liberty Fence, Weber Chevrolet, Ted's Motorcycle World, The Wildey Theater, Mojo's Music Store, The Goodfeet Store, The Peabody Opera House, the Ameristar Casino, Metro Lighting, etc., which was great. When my friend Dave first told me about KSHE eight or more years ago and i started listening, the local ads weren't expunged and they were one of the things that piqued my interest in the city itself.

Another odd thing this week – listenlive.co, the outfit that streams the audio, has this disturbing habit of deleting the local ads and replacing them with public service announcements and songs of their own choosing. A small number of songs and they're all wildly inappropriate and usually obnoxious. That didn't happen this week, yay.

Anyway, here you go with the playlist. I hope some of you outside Norway were able to listen!

Starz – Cherry Baby
The Electric Light Orchestra – In The Hall Of The Mountain King
Morning Star – Sad Lady
Head East – Since You've Been Gone
April Wine – Roller

Dwight Tilley – I'm On Fire
Buffalo Springfield – Rock & Roll Woman
Novo Combo – Tattoo
Foreigner – Headknocker
Humble Pie – 30 Days In The Hole
America – Don't Cross The River
Elton John – Funeral For A Friend
Rod Stewart – Mandolin Wind
Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Janis Joplin – Move Over
Crosby, Stills & Nash – Dark Star
Grand Funk Railroad – Closer To Home / I'm Your Captain

KSHE Klassics, March 11th, 2018

According to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Santa Clara, California this morning. Good! Although the Spanish-influenced design of many of the buildings doesn't speak to me, the weather is much nicer there than it is in cold, snow-blanketed Stratford....

It wasn't exactly a classic Klassics Show today, although the first two songs gave me high hopes. A lot of great music, along with a few duds – REO Speedwagon leaps to mind, i can't stand the band, sorry.

At least it was a painless listening experience – apart from all of those damned ads directed to us Santa Clarans! No Internet drop-outs at all, no computer crashes. Life is good.

And i'm sharing this pic of Kate Bush -- who has never been played on KSHE, as far as i know -- simply because i can.

The Who – Love, Reign O'er Me

KSHE Klassics, March 4th, 2018

Quotation du jour ~ Dan Fogelberg: Off in the nether lands/I heard a sound/Like the beating of heavenly wings/And deep in my brain/I can hear a refrain/Of my soul as she rises and sings/Anthems to glory and/Anthems to love and/Hymns filled with early delight/Like the songs that the darkness/Composes to worship the light.

Now this is just plain weird. Remember that last week i was listening from Clifton, New Jersey? This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Manila in The Philippines! I thought that KSHE didn't stream their audio to anywhere outside the USA, but obviously not. Maybe just not to Canada? Odd, too, that the targeted ads weren't in Tagalog. They were the usual ones for America-wide corporations: Walgreen's, ABC-TV, The Home Depot, etc.

It was a good show, too, if maybe not absolutely oh-wow-holy-shit amazing as it can be. Well, it kicked off with a Rorysong, and that's always a good sign. (I wonder if it was a nod towards the fact that it would have been Rory's 70th birthday on Friday? I should Tweet to John (Ulett, the host) and ask.

It was also the first Klassics Show since KSHE's new owners, Hubbard Radio, took over. They have promised not to mess with the station's format. So far, i'm happy. Normally i hate corporate radio – corporate everything, really, but Hubbard is a small Minnesota outfit and i can live with that. It was a seamless listening experience, too – no connection failures at all, no system crashes.

Oh, look, there's the birthday boy:
