KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, April 28th, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~Todd Rundgren: My favourite musician of all time is Maurice Ravel, for at least one good reason. He wrote the first rock and roll song, Bolero. It had drums all the way through it, and when they performed it people rioted. This is how artists make progress: by regularly offending the normal sensibilities.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was back to North B|ergen, New Jersey.]

(At the risk of offending Todd Rundgren, i hate that sodding Bolero. One of the worst pieces of music ever, IMFFHO.)

It's with some reluctance that i'm grading this week's instalment an A. There was nothing wrong with it, exactly – no, it was fine, it was great, but it wasn't extraordinary. There were a few songs i love – not many, though, and far too much of what you might call generic classic rock.

The songs that dragged it up from being an A- or even a B+ were those by ELO, Mama's Pride, Fleetwood Mac and Paul McCartney. Yes, Macca! I have a lot of problems with that man, i hate the historical revisionism he's been performing with The Beatles, but i can't deny he wrote some much-loved music. (Although what has he done lately, eh? Eh?)

Anyway, here's North Bergen. As i've spent so many Sundays there, i was (and thought you might be) interested in seeing what it looks like.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, April 21st, 2019

Quotation Of The Week ~Marilyn Monroe: Everyone's a star and deserves the right to twinkle.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from New York City.]

This week's instalment automatically is graded an A+ thanks to the inclusion of a Dan Fogelberg song but to tell you the truth, based on the first half of the show, an A- was about all i was going to manage. Some excellent music in the first two hours, but very little i could honestly say i loved.

The second half changed all that, though: there was loads of much-loved music and even though i hated the REO Speedwagon track, the great schtuff negated the bad taste REO invariably leaves in my mouth.

I do have one big problem with The Byrds' song “Chestnut Mare.” I love the song, i do. Part of the chorus is “and we'll be friends for life / i'll treat her like a wife.” Er, what?!? He's singing about a horse, for goodness' sake. Just what is going on here?

This week's pic is of A.O.C. I'm inserting it because this is my blog and i can do what i want. American politics these days is such a farce, but i like Alexandria :-)

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, April 14th, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Stephen Fry: Love in all eight tones and all five semitones of the word's full octave.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Santa Clara, California again.]

Yes, i know i'm late getting this week's post up. I've had a rough couple of days, moan, groan. Work-related stress, plus that terribly 21st century problem, lack of time. But this week's program was definitely time well spent. I'm grading it an A.

Lots and lots of wonderful classic rock there and in fact the only song that annoyed me was one by, of all things, a St Louis band, Pavlov's Dog (i generally love all things St Louisan). Their singer, David Surkamp, has possibly the most irritating voices of all time – worse, even, than Roger Chapman's. He, at least, had better material to work with.

I can't possibly choose a highlight, there was just so much wonderful schtuff. Here's the playlist, but before that there's a pic of The Snake Charmer, an absolutely wonderful Bengali musician and i can guarantee that she'll never be played on KSHE:

The Kinks – 'Till The End Of The Day
Jethro Tull – To Cry You A Song

The Alan Parsons Project – I'd Rather Be A Man
The Beatles – I Should Have Known Better

Journey – Where Were You
Bob Weir – Bombs Away
Steely Dan – Kid Charlemagne
Robin Trower – Victims Of The Fury
Michael Fennelly – Shine A Light
The Grateful Dead – Tennessee Jed
Breathless – Takin' It Back
Roger Daltrey – It's A Hard Life / Giving It All Away
Deodato – Super Strut
The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver – (I Don't Want To Love You But) You Got Me    Anyway
Rush – Time Stands Still
The Poussette-Dart Band – Amnesia
Poco – Bad Weather
The Smithereens – Blues Before And After
Michael Murphey – Wildfire
Stephen Stills – Change Partners
Thin Lizzy – Don't Believe A Word

Bruce Springsteen – Prove It All Night
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – Ripplin' Waters
Frankie & The Knockouts – Running Into The Night
Pavlov's Dog – She Came Shining
Dave Mason – World In Changes

My psychiatrist suggested that i play these albums at home this week. Cheaper than valium, she said, and she was right.

Oh, did i say psychiatrist? I meant, bartender. Same thing.

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, April 7th, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Benjamin Franklin: In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is Freedom, in water there is bacteria.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from North Bergen, New Jersey again.]

Well, wow. And indeed, WOW! I'm almost – almost -- tempted to give this week's show an A++ even though there was no Rorysong. It was brilliant, rather like listening to my own record collection without the hassle of having to leave my chair every five minutes to change the CD. So much music that i loved and at least three songs that i would include in my personal top 100 favourites: Renaissance, Eagles and Genesis.

In fact, in the entire four hours' worth of music (which, without the ads would probably be little more than 2½ hours) (i keep meaning to verify that with a stopwatch, but i forget every week), there was only one song that kinda sorta annoyed me. No, it wasn't Styx, surprisingly enough. It was Derek &The Dominos. Their album has some great music on it but it was a alcohol / cocaine / heroin-fuelled mess and today's track was the worst.

And here's a great St Louis brew:

KSHE KLASSICS SHOW, March 31st, 2019

Quotation du jour ~ Albert Einstein: If i were not a physicist, i would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.

[As you may or may not know, i live in Canada, and for some reason KSHE doesn't stream their audio to here and i have to connect via a VPN, to spoof a non-Canadian address. This week, according to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ i was listening from Santa Clara, California: the first time in a while that i've been in the 95051 zip code.]

This morning's show was dedicated to Olivia Ulett, the host's daughter, who has 28 candles on her birthday cake today, and she inspired an excellent program. It would have easily earned a grade of A+ even without the inclusion of Dan Fogelberg (which means – as i've probably said ad nauseam – an A+ automatically).

One reason i love this show as much as i do is that, so often, it's rather like playing my own record collection. That wasn't quite true today – i have nothing by the KBC Band or Flo & Eddie or a few others, but still, what a playlist! There wasn't anything that annoyed me and so much great schtuff....

The Jeff Beck Group – I Ain't Superstitious
Flo & Eddie – Keep It Warm
Charlie – Fight Dirty
The Who – New Song
Journey – Only The Young
Dan Fogelberg – Face The Fire
Steely Dan – The Caves Of Altamira
Illinois Speed Press – P.N.S. (When You Come Around)

Paul McCartney – Letting Go
Jefferson Starship – Caroline
Neil Young – This Note's For You
Van Morrison – Caravan
Foghat – Somebody's Been Sleepin' In My Bed

I don't actually have a gynæcologist, but if i had, i'm sure he/she would have suggested this week's playlist at home – to help me deal with the -- oh, i can't use the word, but it rhymes with bunts –that i have to suffer every day at my woek.
